ABC's of Requirements Engineering

Mario Moreira
Date: May 24 - 12:00 PM
Track: Road to Quality
[Jump to this session]

Session Abstract:
Requirements Engineering plays a fundamental role in the establishment and success of a project release.  Poor requirements engineering can lead to cancelled projects, significant project cost overruns, and inadequate release deliverables.  Often times, in the requirements engineering space, there is a focus on only requirements management. However, in order to manage requirements, requirements must be elicited, documented, and approved. These steps will lead to a more effective process of managing change to requirements and will enable the ability to trace to and from requirements.

This session will walk the audience through important steps of Requirements Engineering and the details of each that may help you establish your own successful requirements engineering capability.  This includes eliciting requirements, documenting requirements, clarifying requirements, approving and baselining requirements, managing the requirements after approval, and establishing traceability from requirements thru test.

In addition, this session will also introduce where Configuration Management (CM) plays a role in the requirements space and provides guidance for tailoring your requirements engineering capability to meet the demand of projects that have Distributed Development aspects and those projects that follow an Iterative Approach.  This can add and help in implementing a successful requirements engineering capability.
