Track - Road to Quality
[Jump to this session]

Session Abstract:
We all know about companies who never have the time to do it right, but always have the time to do it over again! There is clearly value in doing things right in the first place. But we have only so much time and money we can invest. How much investment in quality is too much? How much is not enough? How can we determine where the optimum point is? How do we strike the right balance?

The first step in determining the right balance is to look at our past performance. On the last few projects we have undertaken, have we produced the level of quality that we need? If we have, then we clearly don’t need to invest more in the future. The way we approached those past projects was sufficient for our needs.

But most of us must admit that the quality levels we have achieved fell short of what we needed. In those cases, we must change how we invest in quality. Indeed to hope for better results while doing the same tired old things is folly! Different results require different actions.

Deciding what those differences should be requires some investigation and thought. In fact, there are three different strategies we can take. We can:

1) Add more defect detection and removal activities to clean up the product before it is released.
2) Improve the effectiveness of the defect detection and removal activities that we already do.
3) Improve our engineering processes so we produce better quality to start with.

Or, maybe we should do some combination of these things!

In this discussion, we will look at how to decide where our quality dollars should be invested in order to achieve the quality we need, while making an investment we can afford.
