But most of us must admit that the quality levels we have achieved fell short of what we needed. In those cases, we must change how we invest in quality. Indeed to hope for better results while doing the same tired old things is folly! Different results require different actions. Deciding what those differences should be requires some investigation and thought. In fact, there are three different strategies we can take. We can: 1) Add more defect detection and removal activities to clean up the product before it is released. 2) Improve the effectiveness of the defect detection and removal activities that we already do. 3) Improve our engineering processes so we produce better quality to start with. Or, maybe we should do some combination of these things! In this discussion, we will look at how to decide where our quality dollars should be invested in order to achieve the quality we need, while making an investment we can afford. Speaker Bio: Alan S.
