Session Abstract:
Industry accepted definitions of SCM do not help us explain the core benefits of SCM nor do they help us focus implementations where they will do the most good. This presentation discusses the problems caused by these “accepted definitions” and improved definitions are offered. Implementation best practices resulting from over 30 years of “dirty finger nails ”experience are reviewed, including Bob’s “Follow the Files”™ approach for defining SCM process implementations.

Bob has more than 30 years of management, engineering, and training experience with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Serena (formerly Merant), Pretzel Logic Consulting, GE Aerospace, GE Corporate Engineering, Sanders Associates and Hamilton Standard.  Bob has also taught continuing education courses for Southern Polytechnic University in Marietta, GA, and SCM Seminars for Technology Training Corporation in El Segundo, CA.  Among the positions he has held are Director, SCM Evangelism, Manager, C130 Configuration and Data Management, Manager, System/Software Engineering Environment and SCM, Manager Computer Resources, Sr. Consultant and Principal Mechanical Engineer.  Bob has presented enthusiastically received SCM seminars in the U.S. and Europe.  Bob contributed an article on SCM Tools which was published in the Encyclopedia of Software Engineering, and contributed to the Addison Wesley book “Software Configuration Management Patterns: Effective Teamwork, Practical Integration” by Steve Berczuk and Brad Appleton.  In March 2001 Computerworld honored Bob as one of its Premier 100 IT Leaders for 2001.

Ventimiglia earned his BS Aeronautics and Astronautics and MS Engineering Mechanics from New York University
